Early Game Goal. Skills in Melvor Idle often follow a natural progression order, you need Mining to get ore for Smithing, which allows you to make armour and weapons for Combat. Deciding which skill to level first becomes a more intuitive choice once you understand which items are needed for your chosen goal.
Thievery has a progression problem. Stealth is super important. So getting gear and bonuses that boosts it is critical to the process of leveling. Getting the sneakers, goblin mask, and thiever's cape feel like a big deal because they are. You should definitely use longbows to level, not crossbows. Also keep in mind that each gem produces more than 1 bolt. With max Fletching & mastery for that bolt, each gem will provide ~12 bolts. The reason you use crossbows is because you need an off-hand for damage reduction in order to idle a dungeon like the Water God dungeon.

Mystic robes are a popular medium-level Magic armour. Mystic robes give a comparatively high Magic Attack and Defence bonus, but nothing else.
