DCSS is easy to get started in and will teach the RL fundamentals. The flow of DCSS is a lot more simple too. Just keep going down, check out branches, etc. The Tome overworld is uh, less clear.
Here's my anecdotal comparison: beating Dungeonmans in Roguelike mode for the first time and getting 100% achievements took me 43 hours, according to Steam metrics. Clearing ToME for the first time in Roguelike mode while also earning only about 20% achievements took me 300+ hours, and that was on Normal difficulty. The loot is vastly simplified compared to Maj'Eyal, but just about any roguelike is going to have simpler itemization than Maj'Eyal. Yea, My favorites are the ones that make exploring a natural and quick process. Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, Tome 4, COQ, cogmind. DCSS was my first roguelike, and I absolutely loved the auto explore feature.
