Bhaal is actually pretty shit at being a god so being his Chosen isn't saying much. Astarion is presumably MUCH more powerful than he is allowed in game, likely because the tadpole is affecting him still. Once the tadpole is gone, he should start developing the powers of vampires such as Cazador with none of the downsides.
The Astarion you knew is essentially dead. You can talk Astarion out of it. There's a persuasion check, or an insight + persuasion. It is harder if you supported his decision before this. You can also kill one of the spawn, but he may get pissed and leave the party. If you persuade him he'll be happy you stopped him.
