There's not enough room around the screw to get anything on it. Like many others, I can't get the handles out and as a first step I'd like to get that screw out. ANSWER: The set downward pointed screw evidently doesn't come out. You loosen the screw and then twist off the handle with two wrenches, one on the base and one on the handle.

Grohe was kind enough to send me the replacement cartridges free of charge so I attempted to take off one of the faucet handles by first removing the set screw on the back of the handle. After that step and applying considerable upward force on the handle, it still has not budged.

You might need to put a 2 x 4 or similar against the tile and then gingerly using a pry bar try to remove it. But it still must be attached somehow.
