I have recently purchased a Lefever nitro boxlock (184xxx) that looks to be in good shape, although well used. I would like to do a thorough cleaning on the gun and want to know the best way to disassemble the action. I have carefully removed the stock for possible refinishing (it will probably never be a collector, just a shooter).

Its basically a first step at rust bluing. Use a cheap stainless steel pot, because all the old grease and grime and crud come off, too. When it comes hot out of the pot.. dry with clean towels, and blow out as much water from inside as you can. The metal will be very hot, and the water will evaporate quickly.

This .410 bore Lefever Nitro Special received a complete restoration. The original buttstock was missing, we fit another factory buttstock to the gun that was provided by the customer. A new forend was made and finished to match. Both were checkered with correct flat top checkering. Color casehardening was done by Turnbull Manufacturing, Inc.

I happen to have a Nitro Special butt stock off the gun . I just weighed it .11.80 oz. That's just the wood . I don't think you will get rid of more than an oz. and you will weaken the wrist . It's not new wood, un-altered ones split especially if there is any oil soaked into the wood from the action .
