I personally prefer stamina to start with as it makes getting to out of reach places easier (exploration). I have 30 hearts (max) and 3 stamina wheels (max). I maxed out on hearts before I had finished all the shrines. After that, I had to use new orbs for stamina containers until those maxed out too.
