Difficulty starting the ATV can be frustrating and may stem from various factors, such as faulty terminals or wiring, a depleted battery, dirty or faulty spark plugs, or stale fuel. I did a little research prior to purchase and found this is a problem with these machines. However now that I own it, found low on antifreeze so added some and water is in cylinder now . If the radiator is full of coolant, the problem is most likely the thermostat. The fan switch is in the radiator, so it does not get hot enough to kick on when the thermostat is stuck shut. Given the age, I would suggest checking the coolant circulation after a new thermostat is installed.

If I recall correctly, I don't think the '99 400 has any detents in the shifter and linkage system, so Camo Joe is right. Unhook the linkage; if it still pops out of gear, then it's an internal problem. It's probably the spring loaded gear selector fork under the shifter assy behind the rear head. it's VERY easy for one side of that spring mechanism to fall off when assembling. this way you don't get a full throw when putting it in gear with the hand shifter.

The needle seat has a small screen and it was plugged only letting a small amout of fuel into the bowl. Most of the jets were clear but I still used music wire and air to clear any blockages.

I removed the skid pan and found a tube that was coming out of the engine that was leaking.
