Yes doing it solo increases your chances of getting an exotic and is the best way to get the exotic. You can still earn an exotic from that lost sector if you have a fireteam with you but that's rare. I've had a legendary lost sector drop an exotic in 3 different occasion and it's happened with my friends too.

A few seasons ago it was the lost sector on Nessus with Carl rewarding exotics helmets. I got master down to under 2 minutes on my solar hammer titan trying to get a better loreley. Never happened. Maybe it'd be worth it they rewarded tens of thousands of glimmer, dozens of shards, or something.

The lost sector engrams haven't been "versioned" so far. There is a difference between the loot pools for random-drop exotic engrams, and those from LSs, but it has been possible to get the new exotics from an old lost sector exotic engram, so far.
With a 25% drop chance, you'll get 5 exotics per hour. For Master lost sectors, being pretty generous, let's say they take 2 minutes longer than Legend. You'll run 12 Masters in 1 hour if they each take 5 minutes (ignoring load times). With a 33% drop chance, that's 4 exotics per hour. Master would need a 42% drop rate JUST to break even with ...
