I'm guessing the OP does it like I do, but he forgot to do step 2, he shifted, then stepped on the gas. I've definitely done that, but nothing went wrong with the car after.

Taking the rear wheels of and whacking the drums hard may send enougb vibration to knock them free. This a classic "If it isn't moving, get a bigger hammer" situation. 2.
