If you read your service manual it should give you a list of compatible oils. Tractor supply company has a universal oil which meets a lot of specs. But, I think I paid $11 per gallon for hygard, and $48 for a 5 gallon bucket of TSC universal (for my MTDs), so the price savings was pretty minimal.

I try to stay with one or the other, but have no reservations about mixing them if need be.
