Aug 29, 2016 · The Sportsman has a "crimped tube" that only holds two rounds whereas the regular 11-48 will hold 4 rounds (plus one in the chamber). I picked up my old 11-48 at a gun show many years ago. I think I paid $50 for it and it is still in great condition. The code on the barrel indicates it was made in 1950.

From February 1938 onwards the 20-gauge Model 11 and Sportsman were serial numbered together. From the introduction of the 20-gauge Model 11 and The Sportsman in 1930 they had separate serial number sequences.However, vent rib barrels were fairly rare on the 11-48/Sportsman 48 series guns. If you can find a VR barrel - it will likely be worth more than the gun ($300+). You've got your finger spot-on the market! I did find a vent-rib barrel for an 11-48, and It was $300, and I replied the same; more that the gun is worth.There was no "Sportsman 48" Skeet Grade. There was a Skeet Gun, and it could be had in any grade. The "Sportsman 48" SA was a basic "Standard" Grade with a Skeet choked barrel (or Cutts Compensator). The "Sportsman 48" SB had nicer wood. It is equipped with a Cutts/Lyman Adjustable Comp. Tube. The checkering appears to be in good shape except for one small scuff spot on the bottom of the fore arm. The rest of the stock has a few light scratches from age/use as expected.
